How many followers do you need to make money?
You need no followers to sell your own products, but platform programs set minimums. YouTube fan funding starts at 500 subscribers and ad revenue at 1,000. TikTok Shop affiliate starts at 1,000 followers and Creator Rewards at 10,000. Instagram gifts need 500 followers, Snapchat's program 50,000, and Twitch Affiliate 25 followers with an average of 3 viewers.

Every platform payout program has an entry bar, and most combine a follower count with a views or watch-time target. The bars changed often in 2025 and 2026. YouTube has announced higher entry rules for new applicants from February 1, 2027, and X replaced its revenue sharing program in September 2026.
This page lists each official threshold as published in the platform's own help center or terms, checked October 21, 2026. It also covers the two routes that need no minimum at all: brand deals for small, focused accounts, and selling your own products.
The numbers
- YouTube's ad revenue tier needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
- From February 1, 2027, new YouTube Partner Program applicants will need 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days.
- TikTok's Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days, and you must be 18.
- Twitch Affiliate needs 25 followers, 4 hours streamed on 4 different days, and an average of 3 viewers in 30 days.
- Later's July 2026 guide estimates nano creators with 1,000 to 10,000 followers charge $100 to $500 per sponsored post.

YouTube: 500 subscribers for fan funding, 1,000 for ads
YouTube pays at two levels. At 500 subscribers, with 3 public uploads in the last 90 days and either 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days, you can turn on channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, and Shopping. YouTube pays 70% of net revenue from memberships and Supers.
Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. At that level YouTube pays 55% of net ad revenue on long-form videos and 45% of allocated Shorts revenue.
The bar rises on February 1, 2027. YouTube's August 10, 2026 announcement says new applicants will then need 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days, and Shorts revenue sharing will need 10 million Shorts views in 90 days for every partner. Channels already in the program stay in and keep earning on long-form videos. If you are close to 4,000 hours now, it is worth pushing to qualify before February. Full detail is in how much YouTube pays.
TikTok: 1,000 followers for Shop, 10,000 for Creator Rewards
TikTok Shop's affiliate program is the lowest entry point on TikTok, at 1,000 followers for US creators aged 18 or older. Accounts under 5,000 followers start in a pilot of at least 30 days, capped at 3 shoppable product videos a day and 3 shoppable LIVEs a week, with tighter caps for accounts TikTok tags as Extended Pilot Creators. Graduating needs 5,000 followers and 30 days in the pilot. If you miss 5,000 in 30 days, TikTok may lift some limits early once you pass a quiz, reach 176 Creator Health Rating points, and complete one starter task. Each product shows the commission you would earn.
The Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers, 100,000 views in the last 30 days, and an age of 18 or older, per TikTok's US program terms updated July 20, 2026. It pays only on videos at least 1 minute long and pays out once the balance reaches $50. TikTok does not publish a rate per view. Subscriptions use the same 10,000 follower and 100,000 view bar.
Going LIVE takes 1,000 followers and an age of 18 or older, per TikTok's help center, which says the follower count may vary by region. LIVE gifts need you to be 18 or older and eligible to go LIVE. See how much TikTok pays for what each program earns.
Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat
The clearest published threshold on Instagram is 500 followers for gifts, open to creators aged 18 or older with a professional account. Instagram pays $0.01 per gift star. It does not publish an ad revenue share for Reels, and its bonus programs do not list public entry rules.
Facebook Content Monetization is invite-only, per Meta's March 18, 2026 announcement. You can register interest in the Professional Dashboard. Meta's Creator Fast Track admits creators who already have 100,000 or more followers on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, and guarantees $1,000 a month for three months, or $3,000 a month at 1 million followers.
Snapchat's Monetization Program is also by invitation. Snapchat's help center says it reviews creators who have 50,000 followers, 15,000 hours of view time over 28 days with at least 3,000 hours from Spotlight, Snap Star status, and an age of 18 or older. Since May 7, 2026, creators also need 100 hours of Spotlight view time in 28 days for maximum rewards. Read how much Instagram pays and social media platforms that pay creators for more.
X and Twitch
X's revenue program now needs 500 verified followers and 500,000 home timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days. X closed Creator Revenue Sharing to new sign-ups on August 7, 2026 and shut it on September 7, 2026, replacing it with Original Content Rewards. You also need a paid Premium subscription and must be 18 or older. Creator Subscriptions on X set a higher bar: 2,000 Premium-subscribed followers and 5 million organic impressions in 3 months.
Twitch Affiliate has the lowest bar of any program. You need 25 followers and, within 30 days, 4 hours of streaming on 4 different days, with an average of 3 viewers at once on 4 of those days. Affiliates can earn from subscriptions and Bits. Twitch pays 50% of subscription revenue by default, and streamers who keep 100 Plus Points for three months in a row move to 60%.
Partner is a step up. You need at least 6 streams averaging 75 viewers per 30-day period in each of the 2 months before you apply, and Twitch reviews the application. See how much Twitch streamers make.
When brand deals start paying
Brand deals can start at around 1,000 followers if the audience is focused and engaged. Later's July 2026 pricing guide estimates nano creators with 1,000 to 10,000 followers charge $100 to $500 per sponsored post. Collabstr's 2026 report found 80% of the deals on its marketplace in 2025 cost under $300, so small deals are the norm.
Brands are actively hiring small creators. In Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 benchmark survey of more than 600 marketing professionals, 51.43% said they plan to expand their work with nano creators and 52.83% with micro creators.
Follower count matters less than who the followers are. A 3,000-person account about home espresso is easier to sell to a coffee grinder brand than a 30,000-person meme account. Early offers may be free product instead of cash, and free product still counts as payment under FTC rules, so disclose it. See how to get brand deals and FTC disclosure rules.
Selling your own products needs no followers
You can sell memberships, digital products, courses, and UGC with zero followers, because the selling platforms charge a fee instead of setting a minimum. Gumroad's pricing page lists 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale. Patreon's standard plan for new creators is 10% plus payment processing.
This is the fastest route to income for a small account. A creator with 2,000 followers might wait a year for TikTok's Creator Rewards Program, but can sell a $15 guide today. UGC creators skip audience size entirely, because brands post the videos themselves. Compare the options in how to sell to your fans and how UGC creators make money.
Questions people ask
How many followers do you need to get paid on TikTok?
You need 1,000 followers for TikTok Shop's US affiliate program and 10,000 followers for the Creator Rewards Program. Creator Rewards also needs 100,000 views in the last 30 days and pays only on videos of 1 minute or longer. You must be 18 or older for both.
How many subscribers do you need to get paid on YouTube?
You need 500 subscribers for memberships, Super Chat, and Shopping, plus 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. New applicants from February 1, 2027 will need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views.
How many followers do you need to get paid on Instagram?
Instagram gifts need 500 followers and an age of 18 or older. Instagram has no published ad revenue share and no public entry rules for its bonuses. Most Instagram income comes from brand deals, which Later estimates at $100 to $500 per post for accounts with 1,000 to 10,000 followers.
Can you make money with 1,000 followers?
Yes. At 1,000 followers you qualify for TikTok Shop's US affiliate program and Twitch Affiliate, and you can sell your own products or offer UGC. Small brand deals are possible too, though early offers may be free product.
Do views matter more than followers?
Most programs require both. TikTok wants 100,000 views in 30 days on top of 10,000 followers, YouTube counts watch hours or Shorts views, and Snapchat counts hours of view time. Average views and engagement tell a brand more than follower count does.
