How much do podcasters make?

Podcast income tracks downloads. Libsyn's advertising rate card, checked in October 2026, prices a 60-second host-read ad at $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads, so an episode with 5,000 downloads earns about $125 per ad sold. Spotify's Partner Program pays 50% of ad revenue, YouTube pays 55%, and Apple Podcasts Subscriptions pays 70% in year one.

Podcasters get paid in four ways. Brands buy ads, platforms share revenue, listeners pay for bonus content, and a few shows sell their own products. Most independent shows earn from one or two of these, and the right mix depends on how many downloads an episode gets in its first 30 days.

The ad market is large and still growing. IAB and PwC put US podcast advertising revenue at $2.9 billion for 2025, up 17.6% from 2024, in a report released April 16, 2026. That money flows mostly to shows with measurable audiences, so this page starts with ad rates, then covers what Spotify, Apple and YouTube pay, then listener support.

The numbers

  • IAB and PwC put US podcast ad revenue at $2.9 billion in 2025, up 17.6% from 2024.
  • Libsyn's advertising rate card lists $24 to $26 CPM for a 60-second host-read ad and $12 to $15 for programmatic ads.
  • Spotify's Partner Program pays 50% of ad revenue, and since January 7, 2026 it needs only 3 episodes, 2,000 hours and 1,000 listeners in 30 days.
  • Apple Podcasts Subscriptions pays 70% of the price, rising to 85% after a subscriber's first paid year, for a $19.99 yearly fee in the US.
  • Spotify Memberships, launched October 20, 2026, lets podcasters keep 90% of membership revenue.

What the creator keeps

The share of each dollar a fan or advertiser pays that reaches the creator under the platform's published terms. Hatched is the platform's cut.

What do podcast ads pay per 1,000 downloads?

Podcast ads pay about $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads for a 60-second host-read spot, according to the rate card Libsyn publishes on its advertising site, checked in October 2026. The same page lists $18 to $22 for a 30-second spot. Libsyn does not say what period or how many shows those averages cover.

The math is simple. Divide the downloads an episode gets in its first 30 days by 1,000, then multiply by the CPM. An episode with 5,000 downloads and one 60-second host-read at $25 earns $125 for that slot. A pre-roll and two mid-rolls on the same episode would gross $375, if all three sell.

That last condition decides most podcasters' income. Few independent shows sell every slot every week, and marketplaces and networks take a commission before you see the money. Libsyn's rate page does not publish its split, so get any marketplace's commission in writing before you sign.

Topic moves the price. Libsyn's rate card lists host-read ads on Business shows at $30 CPM, Health and Fitness at $27, Technology and Education at $26, and Comedy at $23.

Libsyn listed CPM by ad type, checked October 2026
Ad typeWhere it runsListed CPM
Baked-in host readPre-roll or mid-roll, stays in one new episode$24 to $26
Dynamic episodicPre-roll or mid-roll inserted into a new episode$18 to $22
Dynamic back catalogPre-roll or mid-roll inserted into any episode$14 to $16
ProgrammaticPre-produced spot across many podcasts$12 to $15

How podcast sponsorship deals work

A direct sponsorship, where a brand pays you to read its ad, pays about twice what programmatic ads do. Libsyn's rate card shows the gap: $24 to $26 CPM for a host-read baked into a new episode against $12 to $15 for programmatic spots spread across many shows. Listeners trust a host's voice, and brands pay for that.

Sponsors price deals in one of four ways. Know which one you are signing before you agree to a rate.

  • CPM. The brand pays per 1,000 downloads, usually counted over 30 days. Expect the brand to ask for screenshots from your host's download stats.
  • Flat fee. One price per episode or per month, whatever the downloads. This suits small shows with a niche audience a brand wants to reach.
  • Cost per acquisition. The brand pays only for sales or sign-ups tracked through your promo code or link. Direct-response brands like it because the risk sits with you.
  • Hybrid. A smaller guaranteed fee plus a bonus per sale. Push for this whenever a brand offers pure CPA.

How much does the Spotify Partner Program pay?

The Spotify Partner Program pays 50% of the ad revenue Spotify recognizes from ads in your episodes, plus a share of Premium video revenue. Spotify's help center says you must insert at least one ad break to earn any ad revenue. Premium video money follows what Spotify calls a proprietary formula based on how long Premium subscribers watch your eligible video episodes, and Spotify publishes no rate.

Spotify lowered the bar on January 7, 2026. A show now needs 3 published episodes, 2,000 consumption hours on Spotify in the last 30 days, and an audience of 1,000 in the same window. Before that it needed 12 episodes, 10,000 hours and 2,000 listeners. You also need a legal address in an eligible market and a show hosted on Spotify for Creators, and you stay in by publishing an episode and earning at least $10 in any 6-month period.

The program launched in the US, UK, Canada and Australia on January 2, 2025, and reached Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland in November 2025. On September 17, 2026, Spotify said it would add more than 35 markets later in the fall, including Italy, Spain, Brazil and Mexico. Its help center now lists all four as eligible markets.

Spotify reported paying more than $100 million to podcast publishers and podcasters worldwide in the first quarter of 2025, a figure that covers ad revenue as well as the Partner Program. In September 2026 it said total monthly payouts to enrolled shows rose by more than a third after the eligibility change. Spotify has not published an average payout per show.

Payouts arrive monthly through Spotify Payouts, usually in the last two working weeks of the month, once the balance reaches $10 for a local bank deposit or $100 for a wire. Video podcasters gain the most here, because the Premium video share pays only on video episodes. An audio-only show earns the ad share and nothing else.

How Apple Podcasts Subscriptions pays

Apple pays you 70% of each subscription payment, minus taxes, and 85% once a subscriber has a year of paid service. Apple's help center says your other podcast revenue, including ads, stays 100% yours. A free show earns nothing from Apple.

To sell subscriptions you join the Apple Podcasters Program, which costs $19.99 a year in the US according to Apple's fee table by country. You set the price and Apple runs checkout inside the Podcasts app. Apple sends one payment a month once your proceeds pass its minimum payment threshold, which is $0.02 for a US bank account paid in US dollars. Reports for the previous fiscal month arrive by the first Friday of the current one.

The 30% first-year cut is steep next to Spotify Memberships at 10%. What you pay for is one-tap checkout in the app your iPhone listeners already use. Add Apple once you have a paid offer that sells elsewhere and a big share of your audience on Apple Podcasts. Smaller shows should start somewhere cheaper.

Can you make money from podcasts on YouTube?

Yes. Podcasts on YouTube earn through the YouTube Partner Program like any other video, and YouTube pays 55% of net revenue from ads on long-form videos. Shorts clips earn 45% of the revenue allocated to them from the Shorts pool.

Ad revenue sharing needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. For an audio-first show starting from zero, that is a harder bar than Spotify's 2026 threshold.

The audience is there. YouTube said on February 26, 2025 that more than 1 billion people a month watched podcast content on YouTube as of January 2025, and that viewers watched over 400 million hours of podcasts a month on TV screens in 2024. Spotify said on May 21, 2026 that more than 500 million users had streamed a video podcast on its app.

If you already film your recordings, post full episodes to both YouTube and Spotify. A host-read sponsor earns its fee, and each platform's ad share comes on top. See how much YouTube pays for RPM ranges and the full eligibility rules.

How listener support works for podcasts

Listener support pays a small show more than ads do. At a $25 CPM, each ad heard earns 2.5 cents. A listener who hears two ads in each of four weekly episodes is worth 20 cents a month. The same listener paying $5 a month for bonus episodes is worth about 20 times that, even after fees.

These are the main options for paid podcast feeds and memberships, with fees from each platform's own pages.

  • Spotify Memberships. Launched October 20, 2026 in 34 markets, including the US and UK. Creators keep 90%, and Spotify says its 10% fee covers processing, currency conversion and payouts. A show needs 3 episodes, 100 listeners and 100 consumption hours on Spotify in the last 30 days, hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone.
  • Patreon. Patreon's pricing page lists a 10% platform fee, and its help center adds 2.9% + $0.30 processing on US card payments, plus currency conversion and payout fees. Spotify Memberships content lives inside Spotify, so Patreon suits shows whose paying fans listen elsewhere.
  • Supercast. Built for paid podcast feeds. Its pricing page lists $0.59 per subscriber per month plus Stripe's 2.9% and 30 cents per transaction and a 0.7% billing fee on recurring payments. On a $5 membership, that leaves you about $3.93.
  • Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. 70% in year one and 85% after, plus the $19.99 yearly program fee.

Which podcast income stream should you start with?

Start with listener support while your episodes get fewer than 5,000 downloads in 30 days, and add direct sponsors once you pass it. Below that line, a single host-read is worth less than $125 an episode at Libsyn's listed rates, and finding sponsors costs more time than it returns. For more on finding them, see how to get brand deals. For a full comparison of membership platforms, including Ko-fi and Buy Me a Coffee, see how to sell to your fans.

Shows that moved from Spotify's legacy Podcast Subscriptions to Memberships pay a different rate on those subscribers. Spotify's fee page lists 5.5% processing plus 0.8% to 1.6% currency fees, where they apply, on each legacy subscriber until that person cancels.

  • Audio-only show with a few thousand downloads. Skip ad marketplaces. Open Spotify Memberships or Patreon and give paying listeners one bonus episode a week.
  • Video show. Join the Spotify Partner Program the month you qualify and post full episodes to YouTube. Both pay on views you already get.
  • Show past 5,000 downloads an episode. Sell host-read sponsorships directly. Direct deals skip the marketplace commission, and you set the rate.
  • Show with a large iPhone audience. Add Apple Podcasts Subscriptions after your membership offer works elsewhere.

Questions people ask

How much do podcasters make per 1,000 downloads?

Libsyn's advertising rate card, checked in October 2026, lists $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads for a 60-second host-read ad and $12 to $15 for programmatic ads. A show earns that for each ad slot it sells, before any marketplace or network commission. Unsold slots earn nothing.

How much does Spotify pay podcasters per stream?

Spotify publishes no per-stream rate for podcasts. The Partner Program pays 50% of ad revenue from ads in your episodes, plus Premium video revenue under a formula Spotify does not disclose. Payments come monthly once your balance reaches $10.

Does Apple Podcasts pay podcasters?

Only through Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. Apple pays 70% of the subscription price in a subscriber's first year and 85% after that, and charges $19.99 a year in the US to join the Apple Podcasters Program. Free shows earn nothing from Apple, though ads you sell yourself stay 100% yours.

How many listeners do you need to make money podcasting?

Spotify Memberships needs only 100 listeners and 100 consumption hours on Spotify in 30 days, so fan support can start small. The Spotify Partner Program needs 1,000 listeners and 2,000 hours in 30 days. At Libsyn's listed rates, a 1,000-download episode earns about $25 per host-read ad.

Do podcasts on YouTube make money?

Yes. Podcasts in the YouTube Partner Program earn 55% of net ad revenue on long-form videos. You need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.

Is Patreon or Spotify Memberships better for a podcast?

Spotify Memberships costs less: a flat 10% that includes processing, against Patreon's 10% plus processing and payout fees. Patreon is the better pick if most of your listeners use Apple Podcasts, YouTube or other apps. Pick the one where your paying fans already listen.
